Ven. Matt Talbot may have earned an early reputation as a drunk, a low-life, and a selfish man, but he died a saintly man whose cause for canonization began in 1931.  He shed everything in his old life that encapsulated his sins. Instead, he became a true zealot for everything that encompassed holiness: living for and in God’s abundant grace so that he could gain eternity by embracing a life of extreme simplicity and penitence, prayer, and self-denial.  Who knows how many sufferings Matt silently offered as a sacrifice to God in reparation for his sins and for the sake of many other souls?  Yet that is precisely what makes his story so beautiful: he is one of us, and his life’s journey serves as a hopeful reminder that anyone in a state of darkness and sin has the potential to become a great saint when s/he cooperates daily in the act of total abandonment to God’s love and mercy.
 
Ven. Matt Talbot knew God’s mercy well because he was cognizant of God’s love for him and all souls.  He is an excellent patron for those we all know who suffer from the disease of addiction, and what hope we can all gain in knowing and sharing his legacy with those who have lost all hope.
 
Saint Maximillian Kolbe was a Polish martyr who died for his faith. He became known as "The Apostle of Hope" because of his belief that hope can drive away despair. He taught that prayer could be a important part of helping addicts recover. He said, "Prayer gives courage and strength in difficult moments, it helps one cling to life." 
 
Prayer to Ven. Matt Talbot
 
Lord, in your servant, Matt Talbot you have given us a wonderful example of triumph over addiction, devotion to duty, and of lifelong reverence for the Most Holy Sacrament. May his life of prayer and penance give us the courage to take up our crosses and follow in the footsteps of Our Lord and Saviour, Jesus Christ. Father, if it be your will that your beloved servant should be glorified by your Church, make known by your heavenly favors the power he enjoys in your sight. We ask this through the same Jesus Christ Our Lord. Amen.
 
Prayer to St. Maximilian Kolbe
 
Saint Maximilian Kolbe, your life of love and labor for souls was sacrificed amid the horrors of a concentration camp and hastened to its end by an injection of a deadly drug. Look with compassion upon (name) who is now entrapped in addiction to (name the addiction) and whom I now recommend to your powerful intercession. Having offered your own life to preserve that of a family man, I turn to you with trust, confident that you will understand and help. Obtain for me the grace never to withhold my love and understanding or to fail in persevering prayer that the enslaving bonds of addiction may be broken and that full health may be restored to him whom I love. I will never cease to be grateful to God who has helped me and heard your prayer for me. Amen.
